MR JOHN KERNOHAN LETTER
Our Club President received a special letter of thanks from Mr John Kernohan age 96. Our oldest surviving member.
Good afternoon Doug and Youth Division of Grammar Windsor Hockey Club.
This year , 2022 is the 90th Anniversary of the old "Grammar Old Boys Hockey Club"
We were delighted to receive an open invitation to your recent "Club Day" and prize giving
It was extremely thoughtful that your Committee should have remembered the Grammar Old Boys connection with Windsor!
Some 20-30 "old timers" responded which demonstrates that we all considered the invite to be very special!
Barbara, daughter of GOB "Icon" Garth Twigden came from as far away is Rotorua and two of Garth's sons were also present. Garth did not play in the first 1932 team but was Captain and a key player in 1933 and carried on to Captain the first Senior Championship team in 1935 and Represent Auckland.
My first year with the club was 1945 and I played with Bill Armstrong who was in the original1932 team and who also went on to Represent Auckland . He served twice as president 1953-54 & again 1963-64.
When we arrived at your Clubroom we were delighted to find it decorated in our club colours - Blue & Gold and several tables laid out with many team photos and memorabilia
We were able to relive some of the Glories of the past and many memories of old friends
I was invited to say a few words which enabled me to express the appreciation of your GOB guests. I also "helped" a "Very Young Lady" cut the "Special Cake"
There were several Past Presidents of the old club present an a number who had gained Representative Honours.
I am a Past President and the only surviving Life Member so the whole afternoon was very special to me!
In thanking you all once again I know we wish the Grammar Windsor Hockey Club a long and very successful future - perhaps we can continue our association with you!
The Grammar motto is "Per Angusta ad Augusta " which roughly translated from the latin means "Through Adversity to Success" -- you may like to adopt it !
Sincerely,
John Kernohan
